Introduction
How does aerodynamics influence the design for Formula One cars?
In Formula 1 cars, aerodynamics matters a lot to the performance of the car. See the above diagram for the forces acting on the Formula 1 car in motion.
Here are the design outcomes of a Formula 1 car:
- Maximise downforce, to increase mechanical grip and thus cornering grip
- Minimise drag, increasing the net forward force and thus improve straight-line speed and acceleration
While various teams have different design philosophies and principles for their cars, their technological innovations generally fall into one of these two categories - improving downforce, and/or reducing drag.
