Introduction

How does aerodynamics influence the design for Formula One cars?


In Formula 1 cars, aerodynamics matters a lot to the performance of the car. See the above diagram for the forces acting on the Formula 1 car in motion.


Here are the design outcomes of a Formula 1 car:

  1. Maximise downforce, to increase mechanical grip and thus cornering grip
  2. Minimise drag, increasing the net forward force and thus improve straight-line speed and acceleration

While various teams have different design philosophies and principles for their cars, their technological innovations generally fall into one of these two categories - improving downforce, and/or reducing drag.
